Can also be done for ideological reasons (not perpetuate patriarchy) especially in places without a so well established history of class markers.
My older half brother and his wife combined their last names decades ago for that reason. (divorced now)
Though to be fair she is also of recent English decent, her mother was a war bride that met her husband when he was stationed here in England.
